In the afternoon of August 10, 2015 there had been a serious accident on the A7 in Germany close to exit Kassel-Süd. The 55 year old driver from Hanover got very seriously injured and had to be taken by helicopter to the hospital, and was fortunate enough to survive his crash. The accident was one not involving other vehicles. The KTM was carrying original side-panniers supplied by KTM (manufactured by Touratech) and a BMW R 1200 GS topcase (see picture above). In the side-panniers there is a warning that a maximum load of 15 kg is allowed and that 130 kmh / 80 mph as maximum speed with load should be considered. In the user manual KTM advices to drive slower when using side-panniers or other cases / packing, and described a maximum speed of 150 kmh / 94 mph. At higher speeds the motorcycle could become instable. The driver had been driving faster than the limit prescribed by KTM. German motorcycle magazine Motorrad had in the past already complained about (very) instable handling with both the KTM 1190 and 1290 Adventure range which has been extensively tested by their crew (see Motorrad 23/2014, Motorrad 7/2015 and Motorrad 9/2015). The KBA, Kraftfahrt-BundesAmt which is the German version of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, had done an investigation on this case. Their conclusion is that the driver had not (properly) followed instructions to stay below 150 kmh / 94 mph when his KTM was carrying luggage, and that there was no indication or information pointing to a technical problem with the motorcycle. In simple words, the driver drove faster than safety instructions had told him to do. And gives the impression to continue to live on Cloud 9 with this conclusion. I find the behavior of KTM in this very unfortunate, and I think it is (going to) harm KTMs reputation. Especially as the KTM Adventure range of motorcycles are build with touring in mind, and one is not buying a 150+ hp motorcycle to be limited to 150 kmh / 94 mph traveling on the highway when being on a tour with luggage packed on his/her motorcycle. One would expect his motorcycle of this known brand, with such engine performance at such high price be capable of dealing with this! On top a major competitor of the KTM 1190 Adventure (R) being the BMW R 1200 GS is released to handle 180 kmh / 113 mph under the same circumstances and shows no issues at 200+ kmh. Aside of “high speed wobble” reaching the level of a completely unhandable motorcycle when carrying luggage, some KTM owners are complaining about same instability even without luggage and driving solo (see video below as an example showing instability at 190 kmh / 119 mph on a KTM 1190 Adventure R)! For me this is another indication that there is definitely something not good enough. KTM should be worried about the performance of the adventure range of motorcycles compared to the expectation customers have about this product on base of performance / price / brand image, instead of continuing to hide behind limitations described in their user manual! I had stopped looking to the KTM Adventure range after having read from your customers complaining on instability at high-speeds before this accident. And the accident as well as the follow up on it has confirmed for me at least that I made the right decision. Dear KTM, make your adventure line-up of motorcycles live up to the expectations customers are having for such a premium product designed for touring application!在國外也有好多例子,甚至是事故!
